Complete Guide to FUE Hair Transplant: Everything You Need to Know

Complete guide to FUE hair transplant — Phoenix Hair Center Paris

You've been researching hair transplants for a while. You've seen the before-and-after photos, browsed forums, and watched testimonials — but you still have questions. This guide brings together everything you need to know before making a decision: the technique, realistic results, costs, recovery, and how to choose the right clinic. No filler, no commercial spin — just honest, complete information.

What exactly is an FUE hair transplant?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair restoration technique that involves extracting follicular units (1 to 4 hairs) one by one from the donor area (usually the nape), then reimplanting them into the thinning or bald zones. Unlike the older FUT technique, FUE leaves no linear scar — only tiny micro-dots invisible to the naked eye.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, takes between 4 and 8 hours depending on the number of grafts, and the patient returns home the same day.

Who is it for?

  • Men with androgenetic alopecia (Norwood 2 to 6) with a sufficient donor area
  • Women with Ludwig I to III alopecia, post-partum hair loss, traction alopecia or scars
  • Anyone with a stable donor area and realistic expectations about the result
  • Minimum age: generally 25 years old, once hair loss has stabilised

How does the procedure unfold?

Step 1 — Consultation and design (1h)

The surgeon analyses your donor density, maps out the areas to treat, and designs the hairline adapted to your morphology. This step is crucial: a well-designed hairline makes the difference between a natural result and an artificial one.

Step 2 — Extraction (2–4h)

Under local anaesthesia, grafts are extracted one by one using a punch of 0.6 to 0.8 mm. The distribution of extraction over the donor area preserves its density. At Phoenix Hair Center, we use manual FUE for maximum precision and a low transection rate.

Step 3 — Preservation and sorting (30–60 min)

Extracted grafts are sorted under a microscope (1, 2, 3 or 4 hairs) and kept in an ICE GRAFTS preservation solution at controlled temperature to maximise their viability.

Step 4 — Implantation (2–4h)

The surgeon creates micro-incisions respecting the natural growth angle, then implants each graft with precision. Single-hair grafts at the frontal line, multi-hair grafts in the crown area — for a perfectly natural result.

What results can you expect?

  • Months 1–3: the grafts shed (normal phase — the follicle takes root)
  • Months 3–4: first fine regrowth appears
  • Month 6: visible improvement, 50–60% density
  • Month 12: final result — 80 to 95% density

Transplanted hair is DHT-resistant and grows permanently. A single well-performed session is usually sufficient for life.

How much does it cost?

The cost of an FUE transplant varies according to the number of grafts needed and the clinic's expertise. In France, expect:

  • 1,000–1,500 grafts (frontal line): from €3,500
  • 1,500–2,500 grafts (frontal + crown): from €5,500
  • 2,500–4,000 grafts (advanced alopecia): from €7,500

Choosing your clinic: the essential criteria

  • Qualified medical team: a surgeon must oversee the procedure, not just technicians
  • Before/after results of real patients (not stock photos)
  • Post-op follow-up included: at least 12 months of monitoring
  • Transparent pricing: all-inclusive quote, no hidden fees
  • Verified reviews on Google, not just on the clinic's own website

Turkey or France — the right question to ask

Many patients are tempted by the all-inclusive packages offered by Turkish clinics. The price difference is real (€1,500–2,500 vs €5,000–8,000 in France) — but so are the risks: less qualified technicians, mass production of procedures, no post-op follow-up, and sometimes dramatic complications.
