Female hair transplant: causes, solutions and results

Female hair transplant — causes and solutions Phoenix Hair Center

Hair loss in women: a taboo affecting millions

Male baldness is widely discussed, but one in five women suffers significant hair loss during her lifetime. Thinning hair, widening part, shrinking ponytail… The psychological impact is often heavier than for men, as society still strongly associates female hair with beauty and femininity.

The good news: solutions exist, and FUE hair transplantation for women delivers remarkably natural results when properly indicated.

The specific causes of female alopecia

Unlike men where the cause is mostly androgenetic, women face a wider range of causes:

Female androgenetic alopecia

The most common. It manifests as diffuse thinning on the top of the scalp, without frontal recession as in men. The central part gradually widens. It is classified according to the Ludwig scale in 3 grades.

Telogen effluvium (reactive shedding)

Sudden and diffuse loss triggered by intense stress, surgery, restrictive diet, iron deficiency or childbirth. Generally reversible in 3 to 6 months if the cause is addressed.

Post-partum alopecia

Very common after childbirth. Estrogen drop causes massive but temporary loss. If density doesn't return after 12 months, a capillary assessment is recommended.

Traction alopecia

Caused by overly tight hairstyles (braids, buns, extensions) repeated over years. Follicles of the temples and forehead eventually die. It is one of the best indications for female FUE transplantation.

Hormonal and medical causes

Thyroid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopause, medications… A complete blood test is essential before any therapeutic decision.

Female FUE transplant: how does it work?

The principle is identical to male transplantation: extraction of follicles one by one from the donor area (back of the scalp), then reimplantation in target areas. But there are important female specificities:

  • No full shave: at Phoenix Hair Center, we perform the FUE technique without visible shaving (shaveless FUE). Your long hair conceals the donor area from day one.
  • Goal: density, not frontal line: unlike men, the goal is generally to redensify the part and the crown, not to recreate a frontal line.
  • Single-unit grafts: we favor 1-2 hair grafts for an ultra-natural finish in thin areas.
  • Duration: 4 to 7 hours depending on the extent, under local anesthesia.

The results: what to expect?

Results of a female FUE transplant follow the same timeline as for men:

  • D1-D12: healing phase (see our post-transplant guide)
  • Month 1-3: shedding of transplanted hairs — this is normal
  • Month 4-6: regrowth begins, fine hairs
  • Month 8-12: visible result, thicker hair
  • Month 12-18: final result, maximum density

The advantage for women: existing long hair naturally conceals the transplanted area throughout the regrowth phase. The result goes completely unnoticed.

Transplant or PRP: how to choose?

The two don't oppose each other — they complement:

  • PRP alone: ideal for early stages (Ludwig I), reactive shedding, or as post-transplant complement to boost regrowth.
  • FUE transplant: indicated when follicles are dead (Ludwig II-III, advanced traction alopecia). PRP cannot revive a destroyed follicle.
  • Transplant + PRP combination: the optimal protocol at Phoenix Hair Center to maximize density and result longevity.
« Female transplantation requires a different, more subtle approach. The goal is not to recreate, but to restore volume where it's missing — with complete discretion. »

Still a taboo subject: let's break the silence

Too many women suffer in silence, thinking that hair loss is "a man's problem". That's false. Female alopecia is common, medically recognized and successfully treated every day. The first step is to talk to a specialist.
